Driving 41 minutes further, to Faro Airport instead of Lagos, saved €42 on a week and €196 on a month in our search on 2 October 2026. Lisbon Airport is 3 h 07 away: worth it only if you are flying in there anyway.

Many of the offers at Lagos and Alvor are delivery-only: the supplier brings the car to an address. Ask whether Aljezur is covered, and what it costs, before you book.

From someone who lives here

I live just outside Aljezur and collect a car from Faro airport almost every month. It's about an hour and twenty minutes on the N120 and the A22 (toll-free since 2025), and for anything longer than a few days the airport has always been cheaper than Lagos or Portimão for me. Lagos is handy for a short hire if you can get there, and some suppliers will deliver. In winter the roads out here are quiet but dark and twisty after sunset, so I plan the Faro run in daylight.

Who comes to Aljezur, and which pick-up suits them

Aljezur is a small town on the wild west coast, and the people who come here are a mix you rarely find in one place: about a third of residents are foreign-born (2022), many from Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.

  • Surfers: Arrifana and Monte Clérigo are why many come. A board fits inside an estate or a van far better than a small hatchback; if you need a roof rack, ask the desk before you book - not every supplier has one.
  • Holiday-makers: For a week or two in summer, book early and compare Faro airport with Lagos: the airport is usually far cheaper, Lagos saves driving on arrival day. Renting a car at Faro: 12 tips →
  • Winter stays and remote workers: Coworking and coliving bring remote workers for the quiet months. Winter is when the airport is cheapest by the month, and back-to-back rentals can beat one long booking. Renting for a month or more →
  • People who come for healing and retreats: Aljezur draws people for yoga, Ayurveda, breathwork, sound healing and holistic therapies, at retreats on farms and in the hills around town - often down unpaved tracks and off any bus route. For a week's retreat, compare a car from Faro with the retreat's own transfer; staying longer, or wanting the beaches and the Rota Vicentina walks between sessions, a car usually pays for itself.
  • Residents, retirees and holiday-home owners: If you live here or come back every year, renting month by month can cost less than running your own car, once repairs, inspections and the car getting older are counted. Renting against owning →
